How do you accelerate your timing?
i have a 1990 Honda CRX and i was told that i can get more power out of my car by accelerating my timing. what is my timing, and what does it do. can this hurt my car? is it easy to do, and how do i do it?
The timing is the relationship of when your sparkplugs spark and the gas is in the cylinders.
First it's not referred to as accelerating the timing but rather advancing the timing. If you advance the timing too much, you will be putting the spark out after the gas gets there and the car will stumble or ping. If you retard the timing too much the engine will fire before the gas gets there and again the engine will stumble or misfire or worse backfire through the intake. Either conditon is not good for the engine and will shorten or end it's life sooner rather than later.
As others mentioned if you don't know enough about it you shouldn't mess with it. I believe on your car it is controlled by information passed to the computer via a chip which can be reprogrammed to change the timing.
I'm guessing this advice came from either an old timer like me or the child of an old timer. Us ancients used to be able to go under the hood our our 396's loosen the distributor, turn it a little, go stomp on the throttle and keep doing that until it pinged and then back it off a hair and lock it down and you would gain a few horsepower. Throw in some lighter advance springs in the distributor and gain a little more still because the timing regulated by the spring advance would come on faster.
Your car has variable valve timing, something we didn't even dream of back then.
Go join one of the CRX groups like http://www.crx.org/ and do some reading there and you will learn a lot about making a very good car very fast. I had an 88' CRX and it was a great car that I could drive at 90 and still get 36 miles to the gallon. Of course the guy on Speed TV that put a small block chevy in the back of his wasn't worried about mpg.
